Lotus Exige 265E
Away from the stratospheric world of mega-uber-crazy supercars, there is a lot of potential for the average driving enthusiast to do his bit, while not suffering for the cause. Lotus has developed a one-off prototype version of the Exige to demonstrate the possibilities.
As the name suggest, the 265E produces about 265bhp. This figure is thanks to the upgrading of the fuel system to cope with any mix of unleaded and E85 bio-ethanol and when running on the latter, increasing the volume flow rate to take advantage of the more efficient combustion. For reference, the Exige S, on which the prototype's engine is based, produces 218bhp. Not only that, the torque curve is beefed up across the rev range for even more instantaneous response, no matter what gear or speed you are at.
Lotus claims that the prototype is purely a one-off, designed to provoke debate on the subject of the future of transport and fuels, but with so much media focus on CO
2 emissions right now, we would not be surprised to see Lotus make a limited production run...
