MINI Cooper S gets more power from John Cooper Works

We predicted earlier this week at the announcement of the MINI John Cooper Works Challenge racer that it wouldn't be long before a John Cooper Works kit was offered on the MINI Cooper S. And it's here already. For £1,095 including VAT the MINI Cooper S's 1.6-litre twin-scroll turbocharged engine is boosted in power from the standard 175bhp to 192bhp.

Torque increases too, the maximum rising from 177 to 184lb.ft available between 1,750 and 5,000rpm. An overboost facility also allows the engine to briefly produce 199lb.ft of torque under hard acceleration.

This enables the Cooper S John Cooper Works to sprint to 62mph in 6.8 seconds and reach 144mph (an improvement of 0.3 seconds and 4mph). To achieve that performance gain the John Cooper Works kit includes a sports exhaust and air filter and a revised engine management system. Other Cooper S owners will know your car's a bit more special than theirs via the John Cooper Works badging that's added to the front grille and tailgate as part of the kit. Available from MINI dealerships from September, the fitting takes around four hours.
