For decades Honda resisted developing its own diesel engine, instead insisting that its petrol engines were efficient enough and without the inherent disadvantages of diesel. However, with sales of many diesel versions outstripping their petrol counterparts, even Honda had to bow down. So the Japanese company went away and developed one of the most advanced diesel engines on the market.

Next to the Volvo, the Accord's engine is the highest capacity here being of 2.2 litres. However, unlike Volvo, Honda has still managed to keep the fuel consumption down. In fact, the Accord is the most economical car featured, boasting a combined cycle fuel economy figure of 51.4mpg, bettering even the 3-series. Yes, the Accord is a little slower than the 320d, but it is just as quick as most of the others and its engine sounds the least diesel-like, even when idling.
