The Vauxhall Insignia will be officially unveiled to the world at the British motor show in July, but Vauxhall has released these first pictures ahead of then.

Replacing the Vectra, the new Insignia is a much sleeker car, as Vauxhall aims to change from being a maker of run-of-the-mill cars to one of a much more premium manufacturer.

A coupe-like roof line gives the Insignia a low to the ground appearance, while the front and rear ends have a much more distinctive look than the Vectra's.

Mark Adams, vice president of GM Europe, said: "Our aim was to develop a confident look that reinforces the car's superb driving dynamics."

On the inside, Vauxhall's push for style results in a dashboard that wraps around from the base of the windscreen into the door panels.

Vauxhall says that the seats have been a focus of attention to make them as comfortable as possible. The Insignia will also have ambient interior lighting to give it a soft glow at night.

Less obvious is a lot of new technology that will feature on the Insignia, such as its adaptive lighting that provides nine different headlight settings to cope with varying driving conditions.

There will also be the option of an adaptive chassis, which helps the Insignia deal with changing road surfaces and levels of grip, and also lets the drivers tailor the car to their own tastes.

Four-wheel drive will be offered in the Insignia using a system that sends power to the rear wheels when it senses a loss of grip at the front.

Powering the Insignia is a range of three petrol and two turbodiesel engines.

The petrols will include a 256bhp V6 flagship, while the two new 2.0-litre diesels will offer 128- and 157bhp and are expected to be the big sellers.

An EcoFLEX engine will join the Insignia range after the initial launch to provide a low emissions, high economy model.

The Insignia goes on sale in the UK in October in four-door saloon and five-door hatch shapes.

An estate will join the Insignia range early in 2009 and prices for the saloon and hatch will be announced at the British International Motor Show.
