Today (August 18), new legislation comes into effect that empowers the courts to sentence drivers up to five years in prison if they cause a death due to an avoidable distraction.
The law plugs a current gap, where drivers responsible for a death walk free from the court with just a fine.
Avoidable distractions are defined as anything that takes a driver's attention away from the road and which the court judges to have been an avoidable distraction.
Among the examples given are using a mobile phone for texting or calling, applying make-up and eating and drinking.
Additional changes to the law mean drivers that are uninsured, unlicensed or disqualified when they kill somebody will receive two years in prison.
