Last year, an online petition received 1.8 million signatures against pay-as-you-drive road tolling, yet the government has revealed that it is about to begin a pilot programme with technology that would enable such a scheme.
The pilot is thought to be used to prove the satellite-based technology, which tracks a car's movements throughout the country.
A likely tax-as-you-drive scheme would charge motorists for using their cars at peak times and on congested routes, with lower tariffs for off-peak usage.
The news follows on from last month's proposal to widen some of the country's busiest motorways, but then charge drivers for usage of the extra lanes, or even the hard shoulder at peak times.
It can't be too long before another petition appears...
