Tracey Emin has turned her bed and a tent into works of art. Now she's had the much simpler task of making Fiat's cute little 500 into even more of a masterpiece. The Brit-pop artist has entitled her customised 500 'I Told You Not To' and it went under the hammer at auction for £42,000 to raise money for charity.

The Fiat is described as 'taking Emin's work out of the gallery and on to the street' and follows a long tradition of 'art cars' founded by BMW back in 1975. Emin's design is of two birds hand painted along the side of the 500 supermini and the artist said: "I really enjoyed working on the Fiat 500, which I refer to as the 'mouse car'."

The Fiat sold at auction to an undisclosed bidder and the £42,000 raised will go to Emin's chosen charity, which is called PEAS and is raising funds for a school library project in Uganda.

There will be three more Fiat 500s with designs by Tracey Emin, with one due to be sold before Christmas and the other two in the 2008. If you fancy a 500 but without the £42,000 price tag, it goes on sale in the UK in January.
