Vauxhall Insignia wins Car of the Year

Vauxhall's Insignia has won the prestigious European Car of the Year award, narrowly beating Ford's new Fiesta to the top spot. In one of the closest awards in recent years the Insignia bettered the Ford Fiesta by just one point - with a score of 321.

The Insignia beat 37 contenders this year, just seven cars making it through to the final judging. Along with the Fiesta the Insignia also overcame competition from Volkswagen's Golf, the Alfa MiTo, Renault's new Mégane, the Skoda Superb and the Citroen C5.

Voting for the European Car of the Year award takes place using 59 jurors from 23 countries, with national representation on the jury related to the size of the country's car market and the importance of its car manufacturing.

Previous recent winners for the sought-after award include the Renault Clio in 2006, Ford's S-Max in 2007 and the Fiat 500 in 2008.
