The 6 Series might look like it should instantly be in the £25 congestion charge category, but choose the right engine and it easily avoids it. By right engine we're talking about any powerplant except the flagship 4.8-litre V8 of the 650i and the screaming 5.0-litre V10 of the M6. Their omission doesn't mean that you're limited to the lowly engines in the line-up though, as the fantastic 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder diesel engine comfortably manages to slot into the £8 a day category with its remarkable 183g/km CO2 emissions.

BMW as a whole has one of the lowest average CO2 ratings among its prestige rivals; however, even we were surprised to see that the 155mph capable 635d was so comfortably in the lower price bracket. It's an awesome car too, with mid-range muscle that gives it ridiculous pace. All this in a package that escapes a £125 a week charge to drive into London. Put the £85 congestion charge you'll save with the 635d each week over its 650i relative in the fuel tank and you could convince yourself you're motoring for free. Sort of.
