So all 4x4's are planet unfriendly beasts? Think again. There is a good number of SUVs in the Freelander's size category that easily slip into the £8 congestion charge zone, underlining that not all 4x4s are the nasty polluting machines many would have you believe. We picked the Land Rover here because it easily passes under that 225g/km limit in 2.2 TD4 guise, particularly if you opt for the manual transmission. Choose it and the Freelander only produces 194g/km, which is very comfortably within the £8 zone. However, opt for the automatic and the Freelander emits 224g/km - perilously close to that limit; perhaps uncomfortably so if, like us, you believe that in time the congestion charge's limits will be tightened even further.
It's no trouble shifting gears yourself though, even in London's awful traffic. We'd have HSE specification too, as it's the plushest and best equipped. Indeed, it's good enough to mean you won't mind leaving your Range Rover at home during the week...
