There are only a handful of cars out there able to reach 62mph in 4.2 seconds, and we'd struggle to come up with any others that slip under the new £25 top rate congestion charge. The Lotus Exige S might not be the most obvious car for driving around London, but it's the only one that'll keep up with Ferraris and Lamborghinis while escaping that gas-guzzler £25 charge. The Lotus manages this by sticking to the company's long-held tradition of offering performance through light weight. So the Exige S weighs very little, meaning the 240bhp supercharged 1.8-litre engine is more than enough to have it humble Italian exotica.

The other key benefit of that light weight is regarding consumption and emissions. The Exige S might be a track refugee, but it'll only sip one gallon of fuel for every 31 miles driven, and emits just 216g/km. That makes it a supercar you can drive without environmental guilt, and an additional £17 in your pocket if you're heading into London.
