Audi has come up with a diesel-powered hot hatch called the A3 TDI Clubsport.

The dramatic concept uses a 221bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine that takes it from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds.

A top speed of 149mph puts the Clubsport firmly in the top bracket of hot hatches.

Although only a concept car at the moment, Audi insiders say a diesel-engined hot hatch is a definite possibility from Audi.

The A3 TDI Clubsport will be unveiled at the Lake Worther Tour in Austria.

With Quattro four-wheel drive, the Clubsport sits on 20in alloy wheels.

It also uses Audi's magnetic ride control, which is already on offer in the TT coupe.

Audi won't say when a production version of the Clubsport is set to go on sale, but it's likely it will be available by the start of 2009.
