Ferrari F40

Though the F40 was ostensibly 'just' a replacement for the 288 GTO, it has carved a little niche in cult car history and meant a lot to Ferrari as well as its fans. Mr Enzo Ferrari himself instigated the development of the F40 (while he was the ripe old age of 90 years old) to coincide neatly with the fortieth anniversary of the company's foundation.

The F40 was constructed out of lightweight materials including carbon fibre and aluminium, resulting in little for the twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V8 to do other than propel the two occupants to 60mph from rest in as little as 3.6 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 201mph, a record at the time of the car's introduction in 1987.

Ferrari claimed that the F40 gave its drivers an insight into how a racecar feels, which in this case meant loud and uncomfortable, as well as searingly quick. It takes a brave hand to wring the best from an F40 even today.
