Porsche likes to win races. And to do so it needs to homologate road versions of the cars that pick up the silverware at the weekend. That's why the 911 GT3 RS exists, and the Stuttgart firm has just unveiled its latest version. Based on the already extremely focussed GT3 model, the RS adds lightness and power - along with suspension and aerodynamic revisions - to make it the fastest, most precise 911 Porsche currently produces.
With the latest car Porsche has followed the RS recipe to the letter. There's a new rear wing constructed of carbon fibre that increases downforce; an extra lightweight titanium exhaust system; revised gear ratios; and even a lithium-ion battery in place of a conventional lead acid one that alone saves 10kg in weight. Riding on a wider track, the front and rear bodywork is flared to cover the wheels, the RS wearing its racing look with an overt styling package that includes red highlights in the front air intake, a chequered flag livery along the RS's flanks and red door mirrors and wheels.
The RS's revised 3.8-litre unit produces even more power than its GT3 relative. Fifteen bhp more to be exact, raising the output from the naturally aspirated flat-six engine to 450bhp. That, combined with the RS's revised gear ratios, should see it reach 62mph in less than four seconds. In showrooms early next year, the RS is a hardcore machine for hardcore customers; wealthy ones too, as at £100,760 the GT3 RS costs around £18,000 more than the standard GT3. That doesn't stop us wanting one any less, though.
