The Fiat 500 has romped to victory in the European Car of the Year awards, with a staggering 42 of the 58 judges giving the baby Italian top marks. That helped the 500 score 385 points in total, 50 points more than second placed car, the Mazda2.
Unsurprisingly, the Fiat was a favourite with all of the Italian judges, but the 500 also garnered top marks from every juror in France, Switzerland and Russia. Even three out of the five German judges gave the Fiat full marks.
The Mazda2 may have been beaten into second spot, but Mazda can take heart that the 2 is the only car in this year's competition to have scored points from every juror. Even the hotly tipped Ford Mondeo received no-scores from some members of the panel, though it still came home in third place.
Seven cars made the short list for the 2007 ECOTY awards and, in order of scores, they are: Fiat 500 (382), Mazda2 (325), Ford Mondeo (202), Kia C'eed (166), Nissan Qashqai (147), Mercedes-Benz C-Class (128) and Peugeot 308 (97).
