Nissan gives the third-generation Cube its official world debut this week at the LA Auto Show, using the occasion to announce that its quirky car will be sold outside Japan for the first time.
The new Cube retains the upright four-door design of its predecessor, though takes its distinctive curved squares style even further.
Most notable is the shape of the rear door and side glass. On the right-hand side is a relatively conventional rear door, while the window of the left-hand door extends into the D-pillar and wraps around the back door.
The back door is actually hinged from the right-hand side of the car, opening in a similar manner to a fridge, which Nissan claims is more useful when parked in tight spots.
Inside, the upright dashboard features numerous design flourishes and though the basic interior colour choice is either black or beige, there will be a vast number of colourful customisation options, including "shag carpeting" apparently...
The upright design should allow five adults to sit in comfort, with the rear occupants slightly higher than the front two to aid visibility. The rear bench seat slides too.
For the European market, buyers will have the choice of either a 1.5-litre diesel engine or a 1.6-litre petrol unit.
UK sales are not likely to start before November 2009.
