Porsche updates Boxster and Cayman

Porsche has announced a series of revisions to its Boxster and Cayman model line ups. The new cars feature a host of technical revisions to increase both performance and economy.

The entry-level boxer flat-six engine grows in capacity from 2.7- to 2.9-litres, the increase bringing a boost in power in the Boxster of 10bhp to 255bhp. With the Cayman the increase is slightly more, the 2.9-litre unit delivering 265bhp - some 20bhp more than its predecessor.

The larger 3.4-litre engine of the S models remains the same capacity, but both the Boxster S and Cayman S receive increases in power. The Cayman S now delivers 320bhp and the Boxster S 310bhp.

The increases in output across all models haven't come at the expense of fuel economy. The 2.9-litre range, when fitted with Porsche's new PDK twin-clutch gearbox, returns an official combined fuel consumption figure of 31.4mpg, while the 3.4-litre unit achieves 30.7mpg - that's 11 and 16% improvements respectively.

That new PDK transmission is the same double-clutch system that recently debuted in the revised 911 range. Along with improvements in economy the PDK system allows even faster acceleration than before; the PDK, Sport Chrono pack, launch control equipped Cayman S manages a 4.9-second 0-62mph time.

Along with the performance and economy improvements, Porsche has revised the Cayman and Boxster's styling. New front and rear lights feature, Porsche following its typical route and delivering a very conservative - but effective - visual makeover. Inside, a revised infotainment system is fitted, with USB and iPod connectivity now available as an option. The revised Porsche Boxster and Cayman range goes on sale early next year; prices will be confirmed nearer the on-sale date.
