Volvo C70

Though the C70 is a four-seat folding hardtop convertible, just like the new BMW 3 Series Convertible, it really sits in a different class, where cruising ability is far more important than driving dynamics. The C70 also sits below the BMW and Mercedes in price terms, competing more with the Audi A4 Cabriolet range.

Roof up or down the C70 looks sleek and sporty, though of course boot space is compromised when the roof is stored. Worse than that though is the lack of rear legroom. We suspect the C70 appeals to family buyers, perhaps as a second car, but once the kids grow into teenagers they'll be complaining about the lack of space.

Where the C70 excels is on a long drive. It is supremely comfortable and the choice of engines includes a D5 diesel, which should reduce the number of fuel stops you'll have to make.
