Nissan has wowed New York motor show visitors with its Denki Cube concept car.

Denki means 'electric' in Japanese and explains this concept's power source.

The Denki Cube is a glimpse of the near future, say Nissan insiders, and uses high-tech lithium-ion batteries for light weight and a long range.

These batteries provide twice as much power as conventional batteries in other electrically-powered vehicles.

Nissan already sells the Cube in Japan with a 1.3-litre petrol engine and introduces American buyers to the idea of its funky machine.

The plan for Nissan is to start selling the next generation Cube in the USA and Canada from early 2009.

Living up to its name, the Cube's boxy styling is only softened by rounded edges.

For the Denki concept, Nissan has added a full-length glass sunroof and inside there are new seats and a revised dash.

Nissan has also stretched the wheelbase of the Denki by 9.4in to help accommodate the batteries under floor.

At present, Nissan has no plans to bring the Cube to the UK.
