The Fiat Uno deserved the Car of the Year accolade as much for the advancement in manufacturing technique as it did for the car itself, but in 1984 the Uno was a quantum leap ahead of the much-loved Fiat 127 it replaced.

Most significantly, the Uno was styled by ItalDesign, headed up by the famous Giorgetto Giugiaro. ItalDesign gave the Uno an unusual (for the time) upright body style, reminiscent of a compact MPV, and this paid dividends in terms of interior accommodation, immediately eclipsing its predecessor as the small family car of choice.

Even in Britain it was a popular model, helped by low prices of course, though most of the first generation have succumbed to rust by now... The nameplate still has a following though, so don't be surprised to hear Fiat resurrect it in time.
