The Highways Agency is trialling new smart signs to encourage safer driving.
The new signs will be operating on the London-bound carriageway on the A12, near Kelvedon, Essex.
Called Vehicle Activated Speed Indicator Devices (VASID) it's hoped the new signs will help deter speeding by reminding drivers of the speed limit.
When fully operational the signs will flash up speeding motorist's number plates along with a message to slow down and a reminder of the speed limit.
Mark Pooley, Highways Agency project sponsor, said: "We are investigating whether the system has an effect on the behaviour of drivers. We will assess the vehicle speed data and look at what impact the messages had on drivers and how well the technology worked with live traffic.”
The system is active from this week to monitor speeds, the fully operational signs going into action next week.
It's hoped that the system will help reduce speeds on the road, the trial expected to take seven weeks.
None of the data gathered will be used for enforcement.
