The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is to be offered with an electric drivetrain from next year. Announced by Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management at Daimler, the electrically propelled A-Class will feature battery power from Californian firm Tesla, in which Daimler holds a 10 cent stake.
Few details of the sparky A-Class are known as yet, but expect its lithium ion batteries to provide it with a range of around 100 to 120 miles in normal use and take between six to eight hours to charge from a conventional power socket. Faster partial charging is likely to be possible via higher voltage plug-in points. The A-Class is perfectly suited to alternative propulsion, its innovative sandwich floor the ideal location for placing batteries and electric motors without encroaching on passenger space.
Like Daimler's Smart electric drive model the A-Class is likely to be built in small numbers and leased rather than sold to customers. The new electrically powered A-Class will add to the various alternative propulsion models being offered by the company, with Mercedes expecting to offer hydrogen fuel cell cars in its line up as soon as 2015.
