Most economical BMW ever arrives

BMW has unveiled the official stats for the new 320d EfficientDynamics Edition - and it promises to be an amazingly frugal performer. The 320d is mighty impressive in any event, offering a virtually unmatched blend of acceleration and fuel economy thanks to its torque-laden four-cylinder diesel engine.

But BMW has pulled out all the stops for the new version, serving up only slightly inferior performance but significant fuel economy and consumption gains. In fact, the stats are barely believable for a conventionally-powered executive saloon: 0-62mph comes up in 8.2 seconds, but CO2 emissions are pegged at 109g/km and combined fuel economy is 68.9mpg from the 161bhp engine. That's Toyota Prius-rivalling economy but with performance streets ahead.

Compared to the regular 320d it makes compelling reading: combined fuel economy is 10mpg better, emissions are down by 35g/km (putting the car firmly in the £35 tax bracket) yet its 0-62mph sprint is only 0.3 seconds slower. What's more, BMW will charge nothing extra for the EfficientDynamics version, where as most other manufacturers charge a premium for their 'green edition' cars. It's the most economical car in BMW's entire line-up, including the 116d hatchback.

The 320d EfficientDynamics Edition accomplishes the green near-miracle by a whole host of clever fuel saving drivetrain technology and aerodynamic improvements, much of it refined from similar tech found in the 316d and 318d saloons. The gear ratios are altered, including an extra-long sixth gear for fuel-sipping motorway cruising ability, and it features engine start/stop as well as brake energy recapture. The air conditioning and power steering systems are disengaged automatically when not needed too, and the chassis is lowered to reduce drag.

The newcomer will make its debut at the Frankfurt Show in September.
