What is it?
The Coupé is the third variant in the BMW 1 Series range and we think you'll agree, the most stylish too. Where the first models are easily described as a five- and a three-door, the Coupé takes on the appearance of a two-door saloon thanks to its three-box shape and conventional boot.
However, the Coupé promises to have a sportier edge than its hatchback siblings and reflecting that is the debut of a 135i model to the range. That means the diminutive coupé comes equipped with the relatively new twin-turbo straight-six that sees such good service in the 3 Series. Of course, that's the range topper, but there will be plenty of models in the line-up to appeal to the mass market, including a very promising new 123d version, which is powered by a new twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine.
Is it any good?
We've only tried the range-topper so far and first impressions are indeed good. The looks may still divide opinion a little, but in our eyes it's the most attractive 1 Series to date, especially when viewed from the front three quarters angle.
That alone may sell the new Coupé to potential buyers, but if they opt for the 135i model they may discover an impressive depth of talent. BMW has managed to give the Coupé a more comfortable ride than the hatchback models, despite its more sporting image and this has been without compromising the drive. In short, the 135i model is a blast, managing to engage the keenest of drivers while flattering the less talented. Even with all the electronic nannies disabled it displayed remarkable poise and composure on the test track.
Of course, the small matter of 300bhp or so does good service in such a small (and relatively light) car too, giving it performance on a par with sportscars perceived to be in a higher class.
Should I call the bank manager?
Why not? He may be sceptical at first about the price, but we think it'll be well worth the cash. The 135i model is knocking on the door of £30,000, but entry-level to 1 Series Coupé ownership is less than £22,000 with the 120d. That model is thought to account for about 45% of sales in the UK and buyers won't feel short changed either, as it's an excellent engine. We expect residuals to be strong as well.
Summary
After a few hours on a test track and a less demanding road route on the Swedish island of Gotland, the new 135i made a compelling case for itself as a desirable compact GT car with a distinctive image and a capable chassis. We can't help but think that the new 123d model will be enough for most people though. We're certainly looking forward to finding out as soon as it arrives in the UK towards the end of November.
