Vauxhall's Corsa has always been a big seller in a kind of cars-as-white-goods sort of way, but it's way better than that. Just look at it to start with; in both three- and five-door formats there are few cars out there that can claim smarter lines. It's a fine drive too, and feels like it's been built to last with solidity that shames many of its supermini rivals. What's important here though is the Corsa's ability to return good fuel economy, the little Vauxhall managing 57.6mpg on the Which? tests. That's within 5mpg of the official combined figures - so if you're really determined you could easily improve on that.
The 90bhp engine offers peppy performance with strong mid-range pull that means you can skip gears in the quest to reach the economical sweet spot. Either way the Corsa is an entertaining companion to thread down a road whether you're pushing for maximum economy or maximum thrills.
