Two cars from Volkswagen group and a little Mazda tie for third in this mpg line-up, all three cars managing a very respectable 57.7mpg. We'd expect that from the small and lightweight Mazda2, but the showing in such a high position for the Audi and VW underlines the VW group's quest to produce more efficient cars. Both the Audi and the Golf represent ideal business drivers' choices, each having desirable badges, sophisticated interiors and excellent long-distance ability.
The Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion is an outgoing model too, the next generation car with fuel consumption maximising and CO2 reducing technology set to join the Golf mk6 line up early next year. Expect it to offer even better economy than the current car's 57.7mpg result. If you're after real fun though the Mazda2 won't disappoint, the smart supermini delivering a highly entertaining drive. That it uses so little fuel when doing so can only be considered a bonus.
