60.1mpg, Fiat, Toyota and VW three-way tie

It's hardly surprising to hear that superminis feature heavily at the top of the Which? test tables. The three joint winners all returned a fuel economy figure in excess of 60mpg, each travelling 60.1 miles on a single gallon of fuel. Fiat's Panda is the cheapest of the trio, the 1.3 Multijet coming in at under £9,000. It's fun and frugal too, though if you're after a bit more space then Toyota's Yaris 1.4 D-4D might better suit your needs - Toyota's dealer service is certain to be demonstrably better than if you opted for the Fiat too. For the badge snobs among you looking to save fuel, Volkswagen offers its Polo BlueMotion 1.

We'd perhaps forgo some of the economy and the road tax free status on the VW for its BlueMotion 2 alternative, which adds the comfort of air-conditioning. Either way the three cars Which? put at the top of its table all offer decent, enjoyable motoring that proves you don't have to make too many compromises to be greener.
