Tokyo concept: Daihatsu e:S

A micro concept from Daihatsu explores green motoring in the city for four. A small, efficient engine, light weight and a stop-start system allow this diminutive concept to return nearly 85mpg.

What's all the fuss about?

Eighty five miles per gallon. Need we say more? With the environment at the absolute forefront of everyone's agendas these days, a car that can return such impressive fuel consumption is to be applauded. It might be a concept, but it's based on a shortened production platform, meaning it could well be rolling out of Daihatsu's factories sooner rather than later.

Any new technology?

What's impressive it that it's all fairly simple stuff. There's nothing revolutionary about the e:S, achieving its excellent economy by virtue of being small and light. It weighs just 700kg thanks to paring back on materials in the seats and trim, and despite its tiny proportions Daihatsu reckons it'll fit four adults in there - four friendly, bendy adults on the way to a contortionist's convention, perhaps.

Will it ever see the light of day?

There's nothing to suggest it won't. Based on existing technology the e:S could easily be put into production. It's Japan's answer to the Smart fortwo, with extra space and versatility. It could work in the UK as a result.
