Ford S-MAX

Ford produced the S-MAX as a new type of people carrier, one that genuinely is fun to drive and actually kind of cool. Well, the gamble paid off, as the S-MAX was recently voted to be European Car of the Year 2007. Clutching the trophy proudly, Ford announced at the Auto China show in Beijing that the S-MAX would also be produced in China for the Chinese market.

Though the S-MAX was the star on the Ford stand, there were other locally-produced Ford products on display, including four and five-door versions of the European-style Focus and a Chinese version of the Ford Mondeo, itself voted as China's 'Car of the Year' in 2005. Ford also showed the Focus ST for the first time in China, alongside a Focus racecar, designed to compete in the China Circuit Championship.

In addition to the new cars on show, Ford announced the opening of the Ford Research and Engineering Centre in Nanjing, which will not only be tasked with developing cars for the local market, but also for the world stage. Next year, the Changan Ford Mazda Automobile company will have the capacity to produce well in excess of 400,000 units.
