New Nissan sportscar debuts

Nissan has chosen the LA Auto Show to launch its new two-door sports coupé, the 370Z.

Obviously a follow-on to the successful 350Z, the new car is lighter and smaller, though packs a bigger punch than ever before and Nissan promises higher quality too.

The name refers to a new 3.7-litre V6 under the bonnet, which puts out about 330bhp and 270lb.ft of torque.

For the first time, a seven-speed automatic gearbox option will be offered, with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, which the six-speed manual transmission features a world first rev matching system called "Synchro Rev Control".

Buyers of the new 370Z will be greeted by a much-improved two-seat cockpit. Higher quality materials have been used throughout, which the switchgear and standard equipment has also been enhanced.

Finally, Nissan has freed up more space in the rear, despite cutting the overall length of the coupé by 100m.

Prices and final European specifications have yet to be announced, but buyers won't have to wait too long, as the 370Z is due for sale in this part of the world by April 2009.
