The PT Cruiser might have the looks of an Amercan hot-rod, but underneath those retro lines is a surprisingly useful family car. The PT Cruiser proves that you don't have to drop everything when you have kids, and allows you a bit of style outside the nursery and school gates. The rear seats slide and fold, though unlike some rivals there's no third row in the boot. That's not an issue for most buyers, and it means that there's a good-sized boot too. The '50's looks are echoed inside, the dash featuring classic-styled instruments and a gearshifter that looks just like a pool ball.
It's not got hot-rod performance, but then it's unlikely you'll be wanting a fire-spitting 500+bhp V8 in your family car. So opt for the 2.2-litre turbodiesel, which is plenty quick enough and keeps the fuel bills sensible. If you like the looks but don't really need all the space and practicality then there's also a convertible choice, though it does look rather like a pram with the roof down.
