Perhaps the most successful of our retro rides here, it's amazing to think that the BMW MINI has been around since 2001. That's long enough to have seen it reach the second-generation model, yet demand still seems insatiable for this classic-looking hatchback. The new MINI might be shamelessly aimed at an audience looking for style and driving thrills - space not being brilliant - but some of the original's fuel saving ethos has been instilled in the latest cars thanks to BMW's clever EfficientDynamics systems.

That allows even the go-faster Cooper and Cooper S models to return decent fuel economy, meaning the MINI is a style statement with an environmental conscience. All are excellent fun to drive, and inside and out it reeks of old Mini charm. With plentiful options to choose from you can have your MINI exactly how you want it, and if the rumours are true there'll soon be a 4x4-style version to join the hatchback, convertible and estate, too.
