Introduction
Vauxhall claims that this is the best Vectra yet. That proves to be a statement that is hard to argue with.
What are its rivals?
The Vectra VXR enjoys a rarefied position in that it's hard to find natural rivals with the necessary blend of pace, space and value. Traditional mainstream rivals such as Ford have nothing in its range to compete at present. Subaru's Legacy 3.0R offers an interesting alternative, but can't stay with the VXR's pace. To tackle it head on from a practicality and performance perspective one would need nothing short of a BMW 335i, and that costs nearly £10,000 more.
How does it drive?
Surprisingly well as it happens. Having been left a little disappointed by other, more unruly VXR offerings, the composure, balance and handling of the Vectra came as a very welcome change. The interactive damping system, with selectable Sport setting, does a fine job of keeping the Vectra planted and allows one to cater to the demands of the road being tackled.
Ride comfort isn't the last word in refinement, particularly on the optional 19-inch wheels, but it's acceptable and a well-judged trade off given the chassis' other abilities. Steering is nicely weighted and communicative and the dreaded torque steer is for the most part absent.
What's impressive?
A 2.8-litre turbocharged V6 that offers a huge spread of power and usable performance is the focal point of the sporting package. However, the practicality and space on offer shouldn't be overlooked; the load space is huge and the accommodation in the cabin is more than generous. The fact that all of this is on offer for £26k should worry the competition.
What's not?
That pace comes at the expense of fuel economy. Even at a cruise the relatively stingy 60-litre tanks means all too regular refuelling stops on a long journey. These stops aren't entirely unwelcome though, as the front seats were met with universal disapproval from all those who sat in them - an odd trait given the Vectra's original role in life as a motorway mile muncher. The interface of the trip computer, satnav and audio system isn't as intuitive as it could be either, although this grumble would diminish with familiarity.
Should I buy one?
Performance Vauxhall fans rejoice, as the Vectra recaptures the brand's principles of pace and value for money very well indeed. The looks and image will be a matter of personal preference, but there are very few cars that match the Vectra VXR's overall package of performance and practicality in the same price bracket.
