The Fiat range of cars has scored the lowest combined carbon dioxide emissions out of the top 10 car makers in Europe.
Recording an average CO2 output of 137.7g/km, Fiat beat Peugeot (141.9g/km) and Citroen (142.2g/km) into second and third spots respectively.
The independent study was conducted by JATO Dynamics and shows that Mercedes came in 10th.
This is due to Mercedes' range of cars including several larger, heavier polluting models.
Mercedes made it into the top 10, but Audi and BMW did not.
Fiat puts its number one spot down to its move towards smaller petrol and diesel engines in all of its models.
Lorenzo Sistino, managing director of Fiat, said: "Fiat's aim is to stay as close as possible to people's real needs and our aim is to achieve an even lower average level of CO2 by 2012."
