It's difficult not to be impressed by the Toyota-Peugeot-Citroen triplets. Emissions of carbon dioxide has been kept to 108-109g/km in all of the Aygos, 107s and C1s and the latter may even be fitted with a torquey 1.4-litre HDi turbodiesel unit that returns a staggering 68.9mpg on the combined cycle.
However, few buyers choose their car based on the raw CO2 and economy figures so we'd like to draw attention to the 1.3-litre Multijet equipped Fiat 500. Its CO2 figure of 110g/km is close enough to the best in class and the 67.3mpg economy beats all cars realistically considered to be rivals on the market - other than the C1 1.4 HDi. Admittedly, the Fiat is a few hundred pounds more expensive than the Citroen too, but when you factor in its feel good factor, we think it wins the argument.
