After the announcement from Mayor Ken that vehicles emitting less than 120g/km would travel congestion charge free into London, there was a rash of new models boasting CO2 figures launched, the car makers massaging engine electronics and making other tweaks to bring their models under this important new barrier. Family hatchbacks from Audi, BMW, Citroen, Fiat, Peugeot, Renault and VW all manage this, but it's the new Ford Focus Econetic that stands out.
Tweaked in a similar manner to the VW Bluemotion, this Focus still boasts a 108bhp 1.6-litre turbodiesel, but thanks to low rolling resistance tyres, a lower stance, an aerodynamic body kit and low viscosity transmission oil, it manages 65.6mpg and an equally impressive 115g/km of CO2. It even looks good.
The only two hybrid models on the market deserve a mention too, though they are still seen as an unusual choice. The Honda Civic Hybrid emits just 109g/km, though it can't match the fuel economy of the Focus, while the Toyota Prius betters them both with 104g/km and 65.7mpg. We'd prefer the Focus though.
