Scanning through the specifications of cars currently on the market, the Citroen C3, Mazda2 and Renault Clio ranges all feature models that emit less than 115g/km. Until relatively recently, that figure was considered to be pretty impressive in this class of car. Then the VW Group went a bit crazy and decided to develop new derivatives aimed specifically at dropping the CO2 figure and improving the fuel economy considerably.
The result is what Skoda calls the Greenline, SEAT terms Ecomotive and VW calls Bluemotion. Name them what they will, the technology employed is actually relatively simple. The aerodynamics is tweaked for less drag, the tyres are swapped for low rolling resistance items and the gearing is lengthened to reduce consumption. Fitted with economical turbodiesel engines, the Ibiza Ecomotive, Fabia Greenline and Polo Bluemotion are not quick cars, but they don't feel unnecessarily sluggish either.
It's the Polo Bluemotion and Ibiza Ecomotive that impress most, with identical CO2 emissions of just 99g/km and combined consumption of just 74.3mpg, both figures beating smaller cars from the class below.
