Hennessy says its Venom GT concept is not being built as a 'Veyron slayer'. Who are they kidding? With a twin-turbo 1,000bhp V10 engine, 0-60mph in less than 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 260mph, the Venom GT has only one thing on its mind and that's scalping the Bugatti.

A monster 8.5-litre V10 is lifted from the Dodge Viper and tuned by Hennessy to 1,000bhp and 1,100lb ft of torque. If that sounds a bit puny, Hennessy also offers an additional tuning kit to up power to 1,200bhp...

Even with a 'mere' 1,000bhp, the Venom GT hits 100mph from rest in just 5.3 seconds and 200mph in 15.7 seconds from a standing start. The standard car comes with a six-speed manual gearbox, but you can also opt for six-speed sequential or full automatic gearboxes, neither of which dull performance.

Tipping the scales at 682kg less than the Veyron (the Bugatti weighs almost two tonnes), the Venom GT is also claimed to be a much better handling car. Company founder John Hennessy says: "The Venom will be a much more engaging sports car to drive by challenging the driver with 1,000bhp."

Designed by Brit Steve Everitt, the mid-engined Venom is still in the development stages, but production cars will be ready by 2009. Hennessy has not mentioned a price, but expect it to be as staggering as the performance.
