Like the idea of the Golf, but baulk at the low specification for your money? Then you'd do well to check out the latest SEAT Leon, as it shares a large number of components with the Golf, but for the same money you'll get a model higher up the range, which is better-equipped and has a more willing engine.

The Leon is a newer car too, and therefore features a more modern style. It's certainly distinctive in a one-box shape kind of way, though we found that it splits opinion. We'll admit that the interior is not quite as good as a Golf's, but still well made and the driving experience is remarkably similar.

A word of warning though; read the Euro NCAP safety test results carefully, as the Leon was only awarded four stars for occupant protection against the Golf's five-star result.
