A Peugeot 308 has entered the Guinness Book of Records for travelling the furthest distance on a single tank of fuel.

The 308 HDi 110 turbodiesel managed 1,192 miles around the coast of Australia.

It was part of a 9,000-mile trip by husband and wife team John and Helen Taylor.

They managed the 1,192 miles on just 60-litres of fuel.

This means the Taylors also set a second world record for the best fuel economy from a standard car, which worked out at 90.75mpg.

The only change to the car was fitting energy saving tyres that are available to anyone.

John Taylor said afterwards: 'We were aware of the 308's environmental credentials, but we had no idea it would be such a record breaker.'

The £15,095 308 HDi 110 has an official fuel consumption figure of 62.7mpg.
