Mazda has vowed to cut all of its cars' fuel consumption by 30% by 2015.

The Japanese firm says it will manage this through a continued programme of weight reduction for its new cars.

It will also introduce stop-start technology in 2009, where the engine is switched off while the car is stationary in traffic.

A new petrol-powered rotary engine will also appear in the next generation of RX sports car.

Mazda is the only car company in the world to use the rotary design of engine, which works more like a turbine than a normal engine with cylinders.

A new range of diesel engines will start to be used from 2011, which Mazda says will have fuel economy that's 20% better than its current range of turbodiesels.

Carbon dioxide emissions are also being cut at Mazda's factory, where a new car painting system has reduced CO2 emissions by 45%.

Mazda is also working on carbon neutral bioplastics in place of normal plastics to make greater use of recycled materials.
