Audi has accelerated its launch of sporty new models and at the Paris Show next week the high-performance S4 will take its bow alongside the new Audi RS6.
It's thought that an RS4 variant is also under development, though for now the S4 saloon and Avant (estate) models will take their place at the top of the relatively new Audi A4 range.
Though the new S4 boasts exterior and interior enhancements to differentiate it from lesser A4 models, including tasty 18-inch alloys, it's the engine that is of most interest, as it's an all-new supercharged V6.
Featuring direct injection, the new 3.0-litre TFSI unit delivers 329bhp and 325lb.ft of torque to the quattro four-wheel drive system. Impressively, that maximum torque figure is available from as low as 2,500rpm to nearly 5,000rpm, ensuring that the S4 will feel rapid without the need for high revs.
Audi claims that the S4 saloon will cover the benchmark 0-62mph sprint in just 5.1 seconds, with the Avant model only 0.1 seconds behind. Both cars are electronically limited to 155mph.
Despite all this performance, the use of direct injection helps the S4 saloon achieve a combined cycle fuel economy figure of 29.1mpg.
Keen drivers will appreciate the S4's torque split that sends 60% of the engine's output to the rear wheels in normal conditions. Additionally, buyers may specify a sport rear differential, adaptive damping and dynamic steering, as well as a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to replace the standard six-speed manual.
Following a world debut at the Paris Show, the new S4 will go on sale in March 2009.
