Laughing at the X6 subsides as soon as you throw it into a corner. BMW really has moved things on with this car, and regardless of what you think of the 'coupé' styled SUV it's got quite phenomenal ability on the road. BMW's XDrive is responsible, the trick four-wheel drive system able to apportion drive precisely where it's needed exactly when it's required. Add some suspension and axle tweaks over its already accomplished X5 relative and the X6 is a quite staggeringly competent car.
This is a five of the best of fast SUVs though, so cornering ability alone won't get it a place. Thankfully BMW obliges with the XDrive 50i, a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that allows the X6 to reach 62mph in just 5.4 seconds. An electronic limiter stops the surge at 155mph, though the X6's slippery shape would be certain to let it record a high maximum speed if the electronics were removed. Fuel consumption isn't as bad as it could be thanks to BMW's EfficientDynamics, but get carried away with the X6's amazing ability and the 22.6mpg official combined consumption figure will remain the stuff of dreams.
