Though there were plenty of worthy environmentally-friendly exhibits at this year's Auto Shanghai, nothing else at the show could get the enthusiasts' juices flowing like the superb new Concept CS from BMW.

Never mind the fact that the CS packs the 507bhp 5-litre V10 usually found under the bonnet of the BMW M5 and M6; just look at it! This is the daring new design direction for the brand, the next step on from Chris Bangle's 'flame surfacing'.

The concept also hints at how a sleeker, more sporting version of the next 7 Series could look, with potential rivals such as the forthcoming Porsche Panamera four-door saloon and the Aston Martin Rapide (if it sees production). Odds are though that the concept's DNA will show through on the next generation of BMWs, thought to start with the new range-topper.
