Yes, the distinctive, compact Chevrolet Volt concept did indeed debut at the Detroit Show in January, but General Motors gave it another outing at the Shanghai exhibition. There was big news regarding the car's powertrain as well, as GM announced the development of a new fifth-generation fuel cell system.

The first iteration of the Volt's powertrain involved a lithium-ion battery that provided power to the electric motors turning the wheels. The electricity to charge the battery could be taken from plugging the car into the mains, or it could be generated from an efficient on-board bio-fuelled engine. This is what GM calls its modular E-flex system, where the source of electricity can be changed according to developments in technology. The latest is a significantly improved fuel cell, which provides the same range as the previous generation, but on half the hydrogen, yet it is also smaller and lighter than before. It's a significant step towards less reliance on fossil fuels.
