All cars could save up to 61% on fuel costs and lower emissions by 39% thanks to a new British invention.
The H4V is a simple hybrid system that can be fitted to any car, even after it has left the factory.
It works by installing two electric motors to work with the normal petrol or diesel engine.
When the car slows down, electric energy is stored in high-tech lithium-ion batteries that can then be used to power the car.
Developed by British firm MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association), the system uses a clever front axle that allows the batteries to be charged with minimal drag on the rest of the transmission.
MIRA has installed the system in a Skoda Fabia and reports that the petrol-engined Skoda is now returning 64.0mpg without any change in its normal acceleration or top speed.
There's no word yet on when the H4V could go into production, but MIRA's Derek Charters said: "With this system, we have removed the main problem of many petrol-electric hybrids as this car does not need to be charged from the mains."
