Honda has applied its experience with robots to come up with a walking assist device for the elderly and others with weakened leg muscles.
The device will be launched at the Barrier Free 2008 show in Osaka and Honda hopes it will return the simple pleasure of walking to thousands of people.
Using technology similar to that in Honda's Asimo robot, the walking assist device is secured around the waist by a belt.
It pivots at the hip and provides support to the front of the wearer's thighs.
Compact electric motors give a boost to each stride, which Honda says lengthens the user's stride to make walking more effective.
Currently, the walking assist device weighs 2.8kg, but Honda says a production version would be much lighter.
