Volkswagen has come up with a self-parking system that doesn't even need to the driver to be in the car.

Park Assist Vision will do all the work of parking and lets the driver walk away.

The only thing the driver has to do is spot a suitably sized parking bay and then leave the car to it.

VW says the system is ideal for slotting the car into car park spaces that otherwise don't allow enough room for the driver to easily open the door once parked.

A development of VW's existing Park Assist seen on some of its cars, the new system uses cameras and ultrasound sensors to judge gaps and distances.

The driver can stop the car at any time by using the remote control fob.

VW says the Park Assist Vision system is still under development but will be on a production model within the next two years.
