Porsche goes diesel

Porsche goes diesel

Sports car manufacturer Porsche is said to be preparing to offer a diesel engine in its range from 2009.

The turbodiesel engine will be offered in its Cayenne SUV, it thought to be a revised, enlarged version of Volkswagen's 3.0-litre TDI V6.

Output for the diesel should be in the region of 300bhp, enough to ensure that it's worthy of the Porsche badge on the bonnet.

Rumours of a diesel Cayenne have persisted ever since Porsche introduced its performance SUV.

Porsche has long refuted the need for a diesel in its SUV line-up, but it's thought increasing calls for improved economy has forced Porsche to introduce one.

The Cayenne diesel is anticipated to be unveiled early next year, following the introduction of a revised Boxster.

Porsche is working on a hybrid system for its Cayenne and forthcoming Panamera sports saloon.
