Ford Focus C-Max, Space, fun and frugality

Ford's 89bhp 1.6-litre TDCI C-Max is another tax winner, with the rule changes only strengthening the case for the versatile MPV. It already has class leading dynamics, and it now gives even more credence to the theory that green motoring can be fun. As can practical motoring.

The C-Max has lots of space for people and luggage, and its fuel economy is just about the best in class, with an average 55mpg comfortably achievable in real world driving. The 1.6-litre diesel's 124g/km emissions put the people-carrier in band D, dropping its VED from £120 to £90 for 2010.

It's impressive that a car so big can be so green, and what this particular C-Max lacks in outright pace, it more than makes up for with lively steering, a compliant ride and refined motorway manners. Mind, if you're honest you'd probably still prefer a Hummer, right? Well fear not, help is at hand...
